Fretwork saws, fret saws, and fret saw blades from Pégas - Quality from Switzerland
A fret saw is often called a fine saw or scroll saw and is a special saw used for fine and detailed work in wood or other materials. It is particularly well suited for work where precision and delicacy are important, such as sawing wooden figures, jewellery or other decorative objects. The fret saw is characterised by its narrow and fine blade and its ability to cut tight curves and intricate patterns, which is not possible with other saws.
How do I use a fret saw?
Fret saws are pull saws, so the steep side of the saw teeth always points towards the handle of the fret saw. The saw blade is first attached to a screw clamp. By pressing the scroll saw handle slightly together, you can guide the other end of the saw blade to the second screw clamp and fix it in place. The U-shape of the scroll saw acts as a spring and keeps the saw blade under tension. The workpiece is placed on a special holder with a V-shaped opening ("scroll saw table"), which is attached to a table top with a clamp. When working, the scroll saw is held by the hand on the handle pointing downwards and the clamp points away from the table. The workpiece is held by hand while sawing and turned in the desired cutting direction.
If a desired saw cut cannot be achieved from the outside, a hole can be drilled to thread the fret saw blade. A drill bit can be used for this, allowing the hole to be drilled precisely and to the desired size. Once the hole is drilled, the saw blade can be threaded through and the desired cutting can continue. It is important that the hole is drilled carefully and that the saw blade is not damaged by too much friction. Also, the hole should not be too large so that the saw blade does not have too much play and make unnecessary movements that can lead to an unclean cut.
Fret saw blade variants and their application
Pégas saw blades are made in Switzerland from the best carbon steels available and are subjected to heat treatment after the teeth have been produced. This method gives a high hardness and optimal flexibility.
